Preparation

So, I have officially started my preparations for moving to the Dominican Republic! I am beginning the support raising process, Spanish language training and I am taking a Teaching English as a Foreign Language course this summer. I leave in three weeks to visit Cielo and Nazaret to work on preparations for my arrival and talk to Jack (Director of Mission Emanuel) about where I will be living for the next year or more. I have been so encouraged by the way that things are coming together. :) My current employer just asked me to work full-time in June and July, which will provide some extra financial support for moving expenses. My family has been very supportive of my decision and are looking forward to visiting me in the Caribbean. I have a back injury that I was afraid would continue to plague me, but I have been seeing a Chiropractor for a little over a month and I am noticing a world of difference. I haven't been in pain for weeks. The Lord is good!

We had a recent development in my family today. My grandmother and aunt have come to stay with us for a few weeks. My grandma has dementia and has been very confused lately. She cannot take care of herself. I am praying for her health and for our patience. It can be frustrating sometimes to explain the same thing or answer the same question 100 times in an hour, but I know that we will get used to it in time.

I am also praying, and would ask others to pray, for these next few months as I raise support to move down to the Dominican. I know the Lord will provide more than I could ever ask for and that I need to trust Him. Please pray for me to give this up to the Lord and trust in His provision. It will certainly be a learning experience for me.

Well, I am off to work on my final paper of graduate school. Two more weeks and 15 more pages to go.

Blessings,
Anna

Ripple of Hope

"Let no one be discouraged by the belief there is nothing one man or one woman can do against the enormous array of the world's ills -- against misery and ignorance, injustice and violence... Few will have the greatness to bend history itself; but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written the history of this generation...It is from the numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest of walls of oppression and resistance."~Robert Kennedy

I read this quote a few years ago and have found it to be an encouragement. There are times when the the tide of injustice around the world seems overwhelming. I feel, as I am sure many people do, helpless, powerless to stop the violence and oppression. As I rest in God's love and goodness, I am reassured that He cares for all of His people, the whole world over. That in loving Him, I love my fellow man and must do what little I can to make a difference, however small that difference may be.

Blessings,
Anna

The Backstory

I am a start-at-the-beginning sort of person. So, let me begin by explaining a little bit about me and what has led me to write this blog.

I am a student at the John Glenn School of Public Affairs at The Ohio State University. I will graduate with my M.P.A in a month, June 14th to be exact. It has been five years since I began taking classes at OSU as an undergraduate in Political Science. Through involvement with the university community, I began attending Mosaic church and was offered the opportunity of participating in a missions trip to the Dominican Republic with a group from the church over Spring Break of 2008. Though not my first trip out of the country, this was my first missions trip, which is vastly different from a tourist vacation. The trip was an amazing and eye opening adventure where I experienced God in new ways day after day. Relationships that I formed in the DR with the students on the trip, the staff of Mission Emanuel and the people of the Cielo and Nazaret communities -- along with the spiritual connection and growth -- prompted me to volunteer to lead a group back to the DR the following Spring Break.

I have just returned from my March 2009 Spring Break Trip to the DR and I can honestly say that it was even more amazing than the first trip! I felt God's presence in every situation and circumstance while I was there. It is a challenge to lead and be responsible for a group of your peers. I have a much greater respect for those in leadership now that I have had the opportunity to be involved in the intricacies of planning the trip and guiding students on a journey of spiritual exploration and growth. God has been working on me and my heart and has given me a love for the Dominican and its people. I began to feel a calling to do relief aid work at the end of my sophomore year of college. Over the last few years I have prayed for God to show me where He wanted me to work and though I have been frustrated by a lack of direction at times, I feel as though His call is clear now. I am thankful to all the friends and family who have been praying over the last few months for my decision to step out in faith and trust the Lord's calling to the Dominican Republic. I know that God will be teaching me many important lessons throughout the next few years as I raise support and move to the DR to do His work. Knowing that despite the inevitable tribulations and trials that occur, I will never be alone, I feel encouraged and excited for what is to come.

I return to the Dominican Republic in June, immediately following the conclusion of finals and will spend a week with the Mission's Director, Jack, to figure out the logistics of living in the Dominican Republic for a year. When I return I will begin support raising. I will continue my current job on a part-time basis, which fortunately gives me the opportunity to attend the Leadership Training that my new church H2O is hosting this summer. I will also have time to take a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) course in preparation for some of the work I will be doing with the youth in Bayona. And of course, I will be improving my Spanish, which will be much easier now thanks to my friend David's gift of his Rosetta Stone CDs! Hopefully after a very busy summer, I will be able to leave for the Dominican in September. At least that is the plan for now.
